One of my favorite things about essential oils is that there are so many different ways you can use them! I’ve written extensively about using essential oils for cleaning and homemade beauty products, but I haven’t written very much about using oils to influence your mood! Essential oils can be a powerful tool in helping you achieve and maintain a balanced mood, and they’re so easy to use! I want to start by talking about the oils themselves, and then I’ll tell you how to use them to make your own mood-boosting essential oil spray!
Mood-Enhancing Essential Oils
Many essential oils can have mood-altering effects, and any of them would make a great addition to your own custom mood-boosting spray. Try a few different combinations, and see what you like best! Here are a few mood-enhancing oils to provide some inspiration.
The slightly citrus-y and floral scent of bergamot can be uplifting and calming in stress- and anxiety-inducing situations.
Wild orange smells amazing, and it energizes both body and mind! Use it for an energy boost that will purify the air at the same time.
The warm and spicy scent of frankincense can help you feel relaxed and at peace, even when your emotions are feeling out of whack.
Minty fresh peppermint oil makes a great wake-up call for all of your senses!
These are just a few of the oils you could use to make your own spray. In addition to essential oils, the spray contains distilled water and witch hazel. The witch hazel acts as an emulsifier, which helps the water and the oils combine more easily. The mixture will still separate over time though, so make sure to give it a good shake before each use!
This spray is totally customizable, but I chose a couple of my favorite mood-boosting oils to use in this example: lemon and lavender! Lemon oil can re-energize a sleepy mind, while lavender has a relaxing effect to help curb negative feelings. The result is a simple spray that can help you avoid that cranky and sleepy afternoon feeling (plus it smells great too!)
“Sunny Lavender” Spray
4 oz glass spray bottle
1.5 oz distilled water
1.5 oz witch hazel
15 drops lavender oil*
15 drops lemon oil*
* To customize your spray, just add a total of 30 drops of your essential oil(s) of choice.
Combine all ingredients in the spray bottle and shake to mix.
How To Use Your Mood-Boosting Spray
One of my favorite ways to use our “Sunny Lavender” spray is to use it on my furniture. If I know I’m going to be sitting at my desk for a while, I’ll spritz some right onto my office chair. You could also use the spray as an air freshener of sorts, and spray it around whatever room you’ll be spending time in. You could even spray it right onto your own clothes to keep the scent around you all day!
